“Marine Bioresources and their Bioprospecting Values” - Department of Biochemistry

The Sumner’s club of the Department of Biochemistry, J.J. College of Arts and Science(Autonomous), Pudukkottai, conducted a special lecture programme on “Marine Bioresources and their Bioprospecting Values” on 13.2.2020 at 11.00 a.m. Dr.P.Santhanam, Associate Professor, Department of Marine Science, Bharathidasan University, Trichy, was the resource person. He illuminated the students regarding the rich mega biodiversity prevailing in the Indian coastal regions. He emphasized the importance of ocean in the recycling of carbon-di-oxide into oxygen by the marine organisms. The details regarding the microorganisms, macroalgae, phytoplanktons and zooplanktons existing in the marine ecosystems were discussed. Dr.P.Santhanam highlighted the importance of various bioactive compounds which have immense importance in the field of medicine, food supplements, cosmetics, pollution control etc. He motivated the students to undertake research in marine organisms so that they could be used for the betterment of mankind. He also insisted in making the environment more green and also avoiding the activities which would harm the marine ecosystem directly or indirectly. The future scope of the biochemist in the field of marine science was also briefed by the resource person. After the lecture session, students interacted with the resource person during which he clarified all the doubts risen by the students.
